Wabasso gets revenge vs. RTR in rematch of 3A finals
Prep softball roundup April 11, 2025
WABASSO — Five players recorded multiple hits for the Wabasso softball team on Friday night in its Section 3A championship rematch against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton. While the Rabbits weren’t able to make it out of the section when the teams last faced off, they got some revenge this time around with a 14-4 non-conference win in five innings.
The bats were hot for the Rabbits from the first inning. Audrey Johnson singled before scoring the go-ahead run when Macy Rohlik reached base on an error, and Alivia Olson doubled in another run.
Kayleigha Johnson, Camryn Irlbeck, Sara Carlson and Summer Strand then hit four consecutive singles, with one run scoring on Johnson’s, another scoring on a passed ball, and a third scoring on Carlson’s to make the score 5-0. The inning finally ended with a lineout and a fielder’s choice, leaving runners stranded on the corners.
Aylah Jenniges pitched all five innings for the Rabbits, with three of the four runs she allowed being unearned. She struck out a pair of Knights while giving up four hits and a pair of walks.
Kayleigha Johnson finished the day with a game-high four total bases, coming on a triple and a single, as well as three RBIs. Olson added two RBIs on a double and a single. Rohlik, Audrey Johnson, Irlbeck and Strand each finished with a pair of singles.
Laken Baartman hit a leadoff double and drew a walk for RTR to finish as the only Knight with multiple bases. Taylin Thooft also drove in a pair of runs on the day.
Jaida Fricke was charged with the loss for RTR. She allowed six earned and eight unearned runs on 15 hits over 4 2/3 innings. She struck out one batter and didn’t walk any.
Wabasso held an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when they secured the mercy-rule win. Peyton Jenniges, Audrey Johnson and Aylah Jenniges hit three consecutive singles for the Rabbits. While Johnson was caught trying to steal second to give RTR the frame’s second out, Aylah Jenniges’ single drove in Peyton for the inning’s first run.
Another pair of singles from Rohlik and Olson resulted in another run for the Rabbits, and Kayleigha Johnson reached on an error to drive in another two. Irlbeck and Strand then each hit an RBI single to seal the victory.
Trailing 5-0, RTR first got on the board in the top of the fourth. Paisley Thooft drew a leadoff walk, and Fricke and Daryssa Cruz reached on consecutive errors to load the bases with no outs.
Kynsi VanderPlaats reached base on a fielder’s choice to drive in one run and, after the inning’s first out, Taylin Thooft hit a two-run single to make the score 5-3 with runners on the corners. Still, a 1-2-3 double-play ended the frame.
Just as the Knights made a game out of it, Wabasso brought its cushion back to five runs in the bottom of the frame. Audrey Johnson reached on a leadoff error and a Rohlik single put runners on the corners. With two outs, Johnson hit a two-run triple and then scored when Irlbeck reached on an error.
Payton Johansen scored when Fricke grounded into a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the mercy rule.
Wabasso improves to 4-1 with the win and will look to extend its win streak to five games when it hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (1-2) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton falls to 2-2 and will look to get back above .500 on Tuesday when it goes on the road to face Adrian-Ellsworth (2-2).
YME 9, KMS 5
KERKHOVEN — The Yellow Medicine East softball team scored in each of the first four innings of its Camden Conference matchup against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Sneller held things down in the circle from there with 18 strikeouts to help YME hold on for a 9-5 win in its season debut.
Bailey Mortenson walked and Bayli Sneller singled to start the third before Mortenson scored on a wild pitch and Sneller scored on an Alana Almich double. A strikeout put one away, but Charlotte Paslowski was hit by a pitch and Brianna Nelson hit an RBI single to score Almich. Everra Leenerts then grounded out to score Paslowski for a 6-0 YME advantage.
Sneller tossed all seven innings in the win, striking out 18 batters without walking any. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits in the game, and her two hits tied Ella Cherveny for a team-high.
KMS answered YME’s four-run half inning with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Still, Sneller drove in Cherveny on a groundout in the fourth and the Sting kept the Fighting Saints at arm’s length from there.
KMS tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh. In between, YME scored a pair of sixth-inning runs when Breea Johnson and Cherveny walked before both scoring when Almich reached on an error.
A pair of singles from Cherveny and Sneller gave YME the game’s first run in the first inning, and Cherveny singled in Leenerts in the second to make the score 2-0.
Yellow Medicine East improves to 1-0 with the win and next hosts Minneota/Canby for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Montevideo 9, Lakeview 2
COTTONWOOD — A seven-run fourth inning for the Montevideo softball team decided the fate of Friday’s non-conference softball game against Lakeview. The Lakers answered the Thunderhawks with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but couldn’t muster any more offense in the 9-2 loss.
Montevideo’s decisive inning came on the back of seven innings and a triple. Lakeview retired just one of the frame’s first eight batters, with the lone out coming on a sacrifice bunt.
Facing a seven-run deficit, the Lakers responded in the bottom of the frame. Taylor Hinz singled and Kiara Hinz reached on an error to put two runners on with one out. A passed ball allowed Taylor to score before Emma Brusven drove in Kiara on a ground out, but that was all the run support Lakeview could muster in the game.
Teagan Fiene was tagged with the loss in the circle, giving up eight earned runs on 12 hits over seven innings. She struck out two batters without a walk.
The Hinzes’ back-to-back singles in the fourth were Lakeview’s only hits of the game. The only other baserunners were Adison and Avery Hinz, who each drew a walk.
Montevideo added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Lakeview falls to 0-3 on the season and will look to pick up its first win when it hosts Renville County West on Tuesday for a doubleheader to open Camden Conference play. The games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Lakeview High School.
